Jake's World Cup Predictor Blog

A World Cup blog for predictions and any other random thoughts that I might have over the next 6 weeks or so. Should be updated with scores, predictions and rants about poor refereeing, lucky Germans and why we can't take penalties.

Group B - Jake's predictions

England to win the group. Sweden second. They'll play out a meaningless draw in the final game. This has disaster written all over it - but when you look at our team - and that of the opposition, we really ought to get out of the group without too many problems. Sweden have a good record against us - but 2nd would mean us playing Poland or Germany - and I'd fancy our chances against either team. Now I've said that, watch Paraguay & Trinidad beat everyone....

Predictions:
England 2-0 Paraguay
Trinidad 0-1 Sweden

England 3-0 Trinidad
Sweden 2-1 Paraguay

Sweden 1-1 England
Paraguay 2-0 Trinidad

I don't think this group is going to be at all straightforward for England. In fact, I think England will find the games against Paraguay and Sweden extremely difficult : they tend to start slowly, so coming up against South America's third strongest country in the first match will be a real test and might bring a shock; Sweden are not as good on an individual basis but will play a very high tempo direct game and I think that by the time the Sweden game comes, England will need to at least avoid defeat, if not win, to go through. T&T are not a serious threat but my tip for this group is for England and Paraguay to go through, with Sweden just edged out. T&T will be bottom without a win or a point - the ideal team for the Scots to support....

I see Paraguay are claiming they and Sweden will qualify and England won't even get out of this group. Hmm. Whatever, I suggest Sweden will be going through and possibly topping this group. They have but a hanful of great players (Henke, Freddie and that grumpy one who plays for Juve) but they work hard for each other and play as a unit, and of course they can call on the magic of Larsson - but don't rely on my biased view here, ask any Arsenal fan you like.
